About Ectophasia crassipennis (Fabricius, 1794)

Adults of Ectophasia crassipennis reach a body length of approximately 5–9 millimetres (0.20–0.35 inches). This species shows considerable variation in coloration, with hues ranging from blackish to orange-brownish. It has large, reddish compound eyes. A distinctive characteristic of this species is its broad, flattened abdomen, with sternite 7 folded ventrally. The large wings bear wide brownish or greyish spots, and cell R5 is open at the wing edge. It is difficult to distinguish Ectophasia crassipennis from its close similar species Ectophasia oblonga, because the two share many morphological similarities. This fly is found in Southern Europe and the warmer regions of Central Europe, where it grows successfully in a wide range of habitats. It also occurs in Asia, specifically in Russia, Japan, and China.
