This fungus grows to 8โ20 centimetres (3โ8 in) wide, and can be identified by the grayish spines covering its lower surface. Its flesh is reddish-brown and has a woody texture. Native Americans used the fungus's red interior as a pigment. Some Plateau Indian tribes applied the fungus to skin to prevent chapping. This species is inedible.
