About Echinacea sanguinea Nutt.
Echinacea sanguinea Nutt. is an upright plant that reaches up to 120 cm (4 ft) in height, and typically produces an unbranched stem. Its leaves are arranged alternately along the stem, and are mostly clustered close to the ground; these basal leaves measure 10–25 cm (4–10 in) long and 6 mm (¼ in) wide. Upper leaves of this species bear long hairs. This plant flowers between late spring and early summer, and it grows at low altitudes between 0 and 200 m (0–656 ft). Each individual stem bears a single flower head, which ranges in color from rose-pink to pale purple. The flower head can grow up to 5 cm (2 in) long and 12 mm (½ in) wide, and holds 10–20 ray florets that curve conspicuously downward. The center of the flower head forms a 2.5 cm (1 in) cone-shaped structure that contains the disc florets. This cone-shaped center is purplish-brown on its outer regions, and becomes greenish closer to the very center of the structure.
