About Echidna nocturna (Cope, 1872)
Echidna nocturna (Cope, 1872) has a long, snake-like body, with an average vertebral count of 120.4 vertebrae. Adult individuals of this species have an average length of 48.26 cm. Juveniles range from 8.52 cm to 35.48 cm in length, with an average length of 22 cm. The whole species ranges in weight from 1.12 grams to 296.1 grams, with an average weight of 49.62 grams. Its body is gray-brown, marked by rows of small white spots running along its length. The snout is paler in color than the rest of the body. This moray eel is distributed across the tropical Eastern Pacific Ocean. It occupies both intertidal areas and coral reef habitats: juveniles typically live in rocky shore tidepools, while adults live near these tidepools or in coral reefs. Like other moray eels, Echidna nocturna has a pelagic larval phase.
