About Earias biplaga Walker, 1866

Earias biplaga, commonly known as the spiny bollworm, is a moth species belonging to the family Nolidae. This species was first formally described by Francis Walker in 1866. It is distributed across all of subtropical Africa, including islands in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Adult individuals have a body length of approximately 10 to 12 mm, and a wingspan ranging from 18 to 25 mm. A key identifying feature of this moth is the dark purplish-brown terminal fringe on its forewing. The larvae of Earias biplaga feed on plant species from the Fabaceae and Malvaceae families. This species is recognized as a pest of cotton and cacao.
