About Dulus dominicus (Linnaeus, 1766)

Palmchats, the species Dulus dominicus, measure approximately 20 cm (8 inches) in length. Their upperparts are olive-brown, while their underparts are heavily marked with brown streaks. The rump and the edges of their primary feathers are dark yellow-green. They have sturdy yellow bills and russet-colored eyes. Unlike waxwings or silky-flycatchers, they do not have soft, silky plumage. Adult palmchats show no sexual dimorphism, while immature individuals have dark throats. This species is endemic to Hispaniola, which is shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic, plus the nearby Saona and Gonâve Islands. It is common and widespread across this range. It occupies habitats from sea level up to 1500 meters above sea level, including palm savannas and other open areas with scattered trees. It has adapted successfully to city parks and gardens in locations where its preferred food trees grow. Palmchats eat fruits and berries, including those from palms and gumbo-limbo trees, as well as flowers, particularly flowers from epiphytic orchids.
