About Ducula pinon (Gaimard, 1823)

Pinon's imperial pigeon, also called Pinon imperial pigeon, has the scientific name Ducula pinon (Gaimard, 1823). It is a bird species that belongs to the pigeon and dove family, Columbidae. This species is found exclusively in New Guinea and surrounding islands, and it is named after Rose de Freycinet, born Pinon. Four subspecies are currently recognized, each with a distinct geographic range. The nominate subspecies, Ducula pinon pinon (Quoy and Gaimard), occurs in the Western Papuan Islands, the Aru Islands, and southern New Guinea between the Mimika River and Hall Sound. Ducula pinon rubiensis (A. B. Meyer) ranges from Geelvink Bay to Eatna Bay on New Guinea. Ducula pinon jobiensis (Schlegel) is found on Jobi Island, along the northern coast of New Guinea, and on the Dampier and Vulcan Islands. Ducula pinon salvadorii (Tristram) occurs in the D'Entrecasteaux Archipelago on Fergusson and Goodenough Islands, and in the Louisiade Archipelago on St. Aignan, Rossel, and Sudest Islands. The natural habitat of this species is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest.
