About Drynaria roosii Nakaike

Drynaria roosii Nakaike is an epiphytic plant, meaning it grows on trees, or an epipetric plant, meaning it grows on rocks. Like other species in the Drynaria genus, it produces two distinct types of fronds: fertile foliage fronds and sterile nest fronds.

Sterile nest fronds are rounded, shallowly-lobed, reddish-brown fronds that overlap one another. They do not produce sori, and form the basket-like structure that is characteristic of the Drynaria genus. Fertile fronds are larger and deeply lobed. They bear 1 to 3 sori arranged on both sides of their central rib.

In traditional herbal medicine, preparations made from the rhizomes of Drynaria roosii are used to help heal bone fractures and treat rheumatoid arthritis.
