About Drymaplaneta communis Tepper, 1893
The common shining cockroach, with the scientific name Drymaplaneta communis, is a cockroach species native to south-east Australia. It feeds on organic matter, and is often found under the bark of eucalyptus trees. Between the late 1990s and 2000s, this species experienced a notable population increase in Sydney and Melbourne, and is now commonly found inside houses. This population growth likely coincided with an extended dry period, during which many suburban gardeners added mulch to their gardens, which provided suitable new habitat for the common shining cockroach. Even though it is frequently found inside houses, the common shining cockroach does not carry the same health risks that introduced cockroach species do.
