About Dromogomphus spinosus Selys, 1854

Dromogomphus spinosus, commonly called the black-shouldered spinyleg, is a dragonfly species that belongs to the Gomphidae family. Like all other spinyleg dragonflies, D. spinosus has long spines on its legs that help it capture prey. This species matches its common name: it has black shoulders. The dorsal side of its thorax bears a light green I-shaped mark, with pale oval markings on either side of the mark. Its terminal abdominal segments form a club that has yellow lateral markings. Adult individuals of this species reach an average length of 2.5 inches (64 mm). Adults are active in flight between late May and early September across the species' range. The species ranges from southern Manitoba, across to the east coast of the United States, and extends as far south as Florida.
