Doryrhamphus excisus Kaup, 1856 can be identified by its key physical characteristics. It has a rounded caudal fin with a white outline and mostly black inner area, and its snout is elongated. Both males and females of this species reach an average adult length of 7 cm. Males have a series of bumps and hooks on the upper surface of their snout, while females have smooth snouts. Males mature when they reach approximately 31 mm in length. This species has a wide geographic distribution. Its range extends from the Persian Gulf to the coasts of Central America and South America, and it occurs across the Indo-Pacific and Western Pacific regions. It inhabits reef crevices, and individuals have also been found in tidepools.
