About Doryanthes palmeri W.Bull

Doryanthes palmeri, commonly called the giant spear lily, is one of just two species in the genus Doryanthes and the family Doryanthaceae. Both species in this group are endemic to eastern Australia. This plant is a succulent perennial that grows in a rosette form. Its hairless, sword-shaped leaves can reach around 3 meters (10 feet) in length. In spring, flowers emerge from a stalk that may grow up to 5 meters (16 feet) tall. Under the New South Wales Threatened Species Act (1995), Doryanthes palmeri is classified as Vulnerable. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant. It cannot tolerate frosts, so it needs protection over winter when grown in temperate zones. It requires a sheltered position in full sun.
