About Dorcus rectus (Motschulsky, 1857)

Dorcus rectus, commonly called the little stag beetle, is a species of beetle belonging to the family Lucanidae. Its known distribution includes Liaoning (China), Korea, Japan, and Russia. This species can be distinguished from the related species Dorcus curvidens by its distinctive red shell. Males of Dorcus rectus exhibit mandible trimorphism. As of 2017, this characteristic has only been documented in two Lucanidae species: Dorcus rectus and Odontolabis cuvera, alongside a small number of other invertebrates. Male Dorcus rectus use their mandibles as weapons.
