About Dorcus brevis (Say, 1825)

Dorcus brevis, scientifically named Dorcus brevis (Say, 1825), is a species of stag beetle native to the Eastern United States. It can be told apart from its close relative Dorcus parallelus by several physical traits: it has a proportionally broader body, smooth elytra, and relatively short mandibles. Female Dorcus brevis have unidentate mandibles, while female Dorcus parallelus have bidentate mandibles. The larvae of Dorcus brevis are wood-borers that feed on decomposing wood, with a particular preference for white oak.
