Donax fossor Say, 1822 is a small species of clam. Literature records indicate this species reaches a maximum body length of 18 mm. Its shell can be colored almost white, yellow, orange, greyish, or purplish. Darker individuals of this species may have purple rays on the inner surface of the shell; these purple rays are typically only faintly visible on the outer shell surface. This species occurs along the Atlantic coast of the United States, ranging from the coast of New York State south through New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina to East Florida.
