About Dodecatheon clevelandii Greene
This species, currently also referenced by the scientific name Dodecatheon clevelandii Greene, is also known as Primula clevelandii. It is spring deciduous, meaning it dies back to the ground after rains stop growing. It forms basal clumps of leaves that can reach up to 40 centimeters in length. Its flowers range in color from magenta to deep lavender to white; they are nodding blooms each about one inch long, growing on stems that can reach up to one foot in height. This species hybridizes with Primula hendersonii, and can be distinguished from that species by its green stem. The plant is native to California and Baja California, and it generally grows in open grassland areas.
