About Diversidoris flava (Eliot, 1904)

This nudibranch species is usually less than 50 mm (2.0 inches) in length. It has a yellow body, identifiable by a red mantle margin that has two semi-permanent mantle folds around the midsection of the body. Both its rhinophores and branchia, or gills, are yellow. Identifying individual yellow sea slugs that belong to the genus Diversidoris can be challenging, because multiple related species in this group have yellow forms. This nudibranch was originally described from specimens collected in East Africa, and it has an overall Indo-West Pacific distribution that includes Queensland, Australia, and Hawaii. This species is often found growing on the yellow sponge Hyrtios, which appears to be its preferred food source.
