Scientific name: Dirca occidentalis A.Gray. Dirca occidentalis, commonly called western leatherwood, is a deciduous shrub. Its leaves grow between three and seven centimeters long. Yellow flowers appear on the plant before new leaves develop. This species grows on moist, shaded slopes. It is a rare plant that is endemic to the San Francisco Bay area of California. Its closest relative is Dirca palustris, which is native to the eastern half of North America.
