About Dipsas catesbyi (Sentzen, 1796)
Dipsas catesbyi, commonly called Catesby's snail-eater or Catesby's snail sucker, is a nocturnal, nonvenomous snake species belonging to the Colubridae family. This species is native to northern South America. In June 2021, a Dipsas catesbyi individual produced a vocalization when handled. The vocalization lasted 0.06 seconds, reached a peak frequency of 3036 Hz, and was a modulated note emitted by air exhaled through the larynx. This event marks the first recorded snake call in South America. Dipsas catesbyi can be found in Bolivia, Brazil, Guyana, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela. It inhabits mountainous regions, tropical forests, and lowlands at altitudes up to 1,500 m (4,900 ft). Dipsas catesbyi reproduces via oviparity.
