About Diplolaena grandiflora Desf.

Diplolaena grandiflora Desf. is an erect plant that grows between 0.5 and 3 metres in height. It blooms between late autumn and spring, producing showy flowers that grow upright or hang downward. Each flower has a cluster of red stamens at its centre, surrounded by pinkish-red bracts. Its leaves are ovate, reaching up to 5 cm in length. They are dark green on the upper surface and covered in soft downy hairs on the underside. This species grows naturally on limestone outcrops and ridges in the region between Geraldton and North West Cape. For cultivation, it can be propagated either from cuttings or seed. It grows best with good drainage and partial shade, and requires pruning to boost flower output.
