About Diplacodes bipunctata (Brauer, 1865)
Diplacodes bipunctata is a small to medium-sized dragonfly with a wingspan of approximately 55 millimeters. Its wings are mostly colorless, with the only exception being a yellowish spot at the base of the hindwing. Males have a bright orange or red abdomen, with dark markings running along the dorsal line and the sides. Females are yellowish, and have the same pattern of dark markings as males. The synthorax has two dark spots along its side, one of which is the metastigma. Diplacodes bipunctata is a widespread species found in New Zealand, several South Pacific islands, and Australia. In New Zealand, it is most common in the Northland region, though occasional specimens have been found as far south as Fiordland. In Australia, it occurs across the entire continent, with the exception of Tasmania. It can be found near a wide range of freshwater habitats including pools, streams, and swamps.
