About Diospyros pentamera (Woolls & F.Muell.) F.Muell.
Diospyros pentamera is a small to large rainforest tree that reaches 6 to 40 metres in height at maturity, and measures 60 centimetres in trunk width at the base. It grows in multiple types of rainforest, and grows best in volcanic soil located in fire-free areas with high rainfall. Its leaves are 5 to 9 centimetres long and have no toothed edges. Fragrant white flowers of this species develop in spring. Its mid-sized edible berry matures between December and February, and is eaten by a wide range of rainforest birds, specifically the Brown Cuckoo Dove, Wompoo Fruit Dove, Rose-crowned Fruit Dove, Topknot Pigeon, Currawong, Regent Bowerbird, and Australasian Figbird. Fresh seeds of Diospyros pentamera germinate quickly, though germination is occasionally unreliable. This tree is easily recognizable in rainforest by its dark rough bark, which has a similar appearance to the bark of Ironbark trees.
