About Dioryctria zimmermani Grote, 1877

Dioryctria zimmermani, commonly known as the Zimmerman pine moth, is a species of moth belonging to the family Pyralidae. This moth is distributed across southern Canada, as well as the northeastern and Great Lakes regions of the United States. A separate disjunct population of the species also exists in eastern Nebraska. The wingspan of Dioryctria zimmermani measures approximately 37 mm. Its forewings have a mottled pattern of gray and red-brown, marked with zigzag light and dark patches. The hindwings of the moth are yellowish white. This species produces one new generation each year. The larvae feed on a variety of Pinus pine species, and show a preference for Austrian pine and Scotch pine. In the midwestern United States, Dioryctria zimmermani is classified as a serious pest of pine species. When larvae are fully grown, they reach a length of 18 to 25 mm.
