About Dioon tomasellii De Luca, Sabato & Vázq.Torres
Dioon tomasellii is a cycad species belonging to the family Zamiaceae. It is endemic to Mexico, found only in the Mexican states of Durango, Guerrero, Jalisco, Michoacán, and Nayarit. This cycad grows in oak forest, pine-oak forest, and woodland habitats. It faces two main threats: habitat destruction caused by agricultural development, and overcollection for use in horticulture. This species was first formally described in 1984. A 1997 taxonomic revision of the species elevated one of its varieties to the full separate species status of Dioon sonorense.
