About Dinemellia dinemelli (Rüppell, 1845)
The white-headed buffalo weaver, scientifically named Dinemellia dinemelli (Rüppell, 1845), measures 170 to 190 mm (6.7–7.5 in) in length and weighs 57 to 85 g (2.0–3.0 oz). As its common name suggests, this bird has a white head and white underparts. It also has a bright orange-red rump and undertail coverts, dark brown thighs, and narrow white bands on its wings that are particularly visible when the wings are stretched out to the sides. Both males and females have similar plumage, making them difficult to tell apart. The bird's bill is conical and black. The two recognized subspecies differ in tail color: D. d. dinemelli has a brown tail, while D. d. boehmi has a black tail. This species is native to Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda in Africa. It inhabits savannas and shrublands, and shows a particular preference for dry brush and acacia thickets.
