About Dilophus nigrostigma
Scientific name: Dilophus nigrostigma
Description: When compared to other Dilophus species endemic to New Zealand, D. nigrostigma is quite large, with an approximate body length of 7–8 mm. This species can be distinguished from other New Zealand endemic Dilophus by the presence of three large spines on its fore tibia. Dilophus nigrostigma is sexually dimorphic: males have black colouration, while females have colouration ranging from light brown to reddish.
Distribution and habitat: This species is restricted to New Zealand. It can be found on the country's two main islands, Stewart Island, and the Chatham Islands. Adult D. nigrostigma appear between April and July, and are most common between November and February.
