About Diervilla sessilifolia Buckley
Diervilla sessilifolia, commonly known as southern bush honeysuckle, is a perennial shrub in the honeysuckle family Caprifoliaceae. This species is native to the Great Smoky Mountains and the southern Appalachian Mountains, where it grows on bluffs, along slopes and stream banks, and at the edges of woodlands. It is classified as a threatened species in the state of Tennessee. Southern bush honeysuckle is a compact deciduous shrub that usually reaches 3 to 5 feet in height. It spreads via suckering and grows in USDA plant hardiness zones 4 through 8. The shrub is drought tolerant, and can grow in both full sun and partial shade. It is well-suited for use in woodland gardens. D. sessilifolia is categorized as a pollinator plant that both attracts and supports bumblebees and hummingbirds. It blooms during the summer.
