About Dictyosphaeria cavernosa (Forssk.) Børgesen
Dictyosphaeria cavernosa (Forssk.) Børgesen, also called green bubble algae, is typically found growing in the crevices of rock formations around rocky tidal pools. When first observed, it can resemble a green rock, though it is in fact this algal species. When nutrients are readily available, green bubble algae can spread very quickly. This species has several periods throughout the year where it experiences abundant growth. This alga has a widespread global distribution, and is especially common in South-East Asia. It can also be found growing on rocks in shallow reef areas. On the Hawaiian island of Oahu, it occurs in Kaneohe Bay, where nutrient input from the local sewage system heavily contributed to its growth there.
