About Dictenidia bimaculata (Linnaeus, 1760)
Dictenidia bimaculata (Linnaeus, 1760) is a species of crane fly that is widespread across the Palaearctic region. For members of this genus (formerly classified under Ctenidia), the fourth and all subsequent antenna segments each bear a long basal process and a shorter subapical process. Female antennae have simple flagellar segments; all segments except the first are short, roundish, and broader than they are long. D. bimaculata is a shining black species. Its thorax is black with more or less extensive orange markings. The male abdomen is entirely black, while the female abdomen is black with orange markings on the anterior portion of each segment that spread laterally. The wings each have two large dark brown spots: one extends down from the stigmatic area to the discal cell, and the other, which is somewhat smaller, is located at the wing apex. The legs are orange, with black tips on the femora and tibiae, and blackish tarsi. Wing length ranges from 10 to 15 mm. This species can be found in damp woods between April and July.
