About Dicranopteris flexuosa (Schrad.) Underw.
Dicranopteris flexuosa (Schrad.) Underw., commonly known as the drooping forked-fern, is a tropical fern species belonging to the family Gleicheniaceae, and it is widely distributed across the Neotropics. Like other species in the Dicranopteris genus, D. flexuosa is known for forming dense thickets in disturbed and open habitats. It fulfills a key ecological role in tropical and subtropical forests: it stabilizes soil, moderates microclimates, and promotes forest succession via its rapid clonal growth and stress tolerance. Although D. flexuosa is often removed during forest management because of its dense growth, it can support ecosystem recovery by protecting soil and shaping plant community development. D. flexuosa is widely distributed throughout tropical and subtropical areas of the Neotropics, which includes South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. It is also native to Mexico and even the southern United States.
