About Dicentrarchus punctatus (Bloch, 1792)

This species, commonly called the spotted seabass, has the scientific name Dicentrarchus punctatus (Bloch, 1792). The spotted seabass can reach a maximum total length of around 70 cm (28 in), but most mature individuals only grow to approximately 30 cm (12 in) long. While alive, this fish is silver-grey overall with a blue-colored back, and is covered in black spots. These black spots only appear on adult spotted seabass, and the fish's opercle (gill cover) also bears a distinct large black spot. The spotted seabass typically inhabits brackish subtropical waters at depths of less than roughly 30 m (98 ft). Its native range extends along the Eastern Atlantic coast from Brittany in the north, south to the African coast and the Canary Islands, west as far as the Azores, and also covers nearly the entire eastern Mediterranean coastline.
