About Dianella sandwicensis Hook. & Arn.

Dianella sandwicensis Hook. & Arn. is a flax lily species native to Hawaii and New Caledonia. It is known as ʻukiʻuki in the Hawaiian language. According to Neal (1965), Hawaiians historically used the berries of this species to produce blue dye for kapa, and also used its leaves to thatch house walls. When Dianella sandwicensis does not produce reproductive structures, it looks similar to Machaerina angustifolia.
