About Diadumene leucolena (Verrill, 1866)
Diadumene leucolena (Verrill, 1866) is a sea anemone with the following characteristics and range. When fully extended, it has a long, slender column that reaches up to 38 mm (1.5 in) tall and 12 mm (0.5 in) wide. Both its column and tentacles are translucent pale pink or flesh-colored; the column sometimes develops a faint green tinge near its upper edge. While the column looks smooth at first glance, close inspection reveals irregularly arranged darker swellings. The tentacles that lie closest to either end of the mouth have yellow-colored bases. D. leucolena occurs in the North Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the North Pacific Ocean. It is a shallow-water species that lives in bays and low-salinity areas, growing on stones, the shells of live oysters, and man-made structures including pilings and floats.
