About Deutzia scabra Thunb.
Deutzia scabra is a species of flowering plant in the hydrangea family Hydrangeaceae. It is native to Japan, where it occurs from the Kantō region westward to the islands of Kyushu and Shikoku. This species has been introduced to mainland East Asia, Europe, and North America. Its natural habitat is forest edges and rocky openings. It tolerates disturbance, and can be found growing on stone walls, along roadsides, and in other waste areas. Deutzia scabra is a deciduous shrub that grows 1 to 2 meters in height. A distinguishing feature that separates it from other Japanese Deutzia species is its somewhat dimorphic leaves: leaves that subtend the inflorescence are sessile and slightly clasping, while leaves growing lower on the stem are petiolate. It produces panicles of white flowers, and blooms from May to July. The cultivar 'Candidissima' produces double flowers, and grows taller than the wild species, reaching up to 4 meters (13 feet). This cultivar has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. The pink-flowered double cultivar 'Codsall Pink' has also received this award.
