Desmoncus orthacanthos Mart. is a spiny climbing palm species that is native to tropical South America. Its stems grow in clustered groups, reaching 2–12 meters in length and 1.5–2 centimeters in diameter. Black spines up to 6 centimeters long cover the stems, leaf sheaths, and often the leaves of this palm. It can be found growing in Colombia, Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru. The stems of this species are used for basket weaving.
