About Deroptyus accipitrinus (Linnaeus, 1758)

The red-fan parrot, scientifically named Deroptyus accipitrinus (Linnaeus, 1758), has elongated neck feathers. These feathers can be raised to form an elaborate fan, which greatly increases the bird’s apparent size, and this display is possibly used when the bird is threatened. This species generally lives in undisturbed forest, and feeds on fruits in the forest canopy. Its appearance features a dark brown face marked with white streaks, a bare black patch surrounding its brown eye, green wings, flanks and tail, and a breast with red and blue barring.
