About Derocephalus angusticollis Enderlein, 1922
Like all other flies in the family Neriidae, Derocephalus angusticollis bears characteristic dorsocentral bristles that are primarily located on its thorax, and this trait serves as an identification marker for the species. Within the Derocephalus genus, species differ in the number of pairs of these dorsocentral bristles; D. angusticollis typically has two pairs, rather than the one pair seen in other members of the genus. Variation in bristle presence and count has been observed on body parts outside of the thorax. Some individual D. angusticollis flies have no bristles, or fewer bristles than the species average, which is caused by both genetic and environmental factors including diet quality.
