About Deraeocoris ruber (Linnaeus, 1758)
Deraeocoris ruber is a medium-sized species with a body length of 6–8 millimetres (0.24–0.31 in). Its body is notably wide and glossy. In adults, the upper surface of the body, including the scutellum, can display a range of color variants from light brown or orange to black, while the cuneus is always red. Adults have shiny forewings, unbanded tibiae, and an unbanded first antennal segment. The first antennal segment, and at least the base of the second antennal segment, are black. Nymphs of Deraeocoris ruber are black, with a broad pinkish abdomen that bears black spines. This species occurs across most of Europe, but is not found in the Azores, Canary Islands, Cyprus, Faroe Islands, Finland, Iceland, Malta, or parts of Russia and the Caucasus. It is also present in the Nearctic realm and the Neotropical realm. These bugs live in forests, and are most commonly found on sunny forest edges and in open areas.
