About Dendropsophus melanargyreus (Cope, 1887)
Dendropsophus melanargyreus is a medium-sized tree frog species belonging to the Hylidae family. This species is distributed across Bolivia, Brazil, French Guiana, Paraguay, and Suriname. Its natural habitats include subtropical or tropical dry forests, subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, and intermittent freshwater marshes. Dendropsophus melanargyreus is currently threatened by habitat loss. This frog can be identified by dark blotches covering its back, with body color ranging from gray and tan to dark yellow and brown. It typically has a reddish-brown X-shaped marking that extends from the upper eyelids down to the lower back. The underside of the frog is usually white to pale yellow, marked with scattered black speckled blotches. Dendropsophus melanargyreus is one of eight species that make up the Dendropsophus marmoratus group. All species in this group share characteristic features: warty skin around the lower lip, large vocal sacs, and marbled dorsal patterns.
