About Dendrocygna eytoni (Eyton, 1838)
Description: Dendrocygna eytoni measures 42–60 cm (16.5–23.5 inches) in length and weighs approximately one kilogram (2.2 pounds). It is a long-necked duck with brown upperparts, paler underparts, and a white rump. Its chest is chestnut-colored with thin black bars, and long plumes with black edges grow from its flanks. The species has pink bill and legs, and a yellow iris. Males and females have similar appearances. When flying, Dendrocygna eytoni holds a characteristically lowered neck and short, dark, rounded wings. Its call is a distinct whistle, which is the origin of its common name. Distribution and habitat: This species ranges across eastern, northern, and central Australia, spanning from the Kimberley region across the Top End and Cape York, extending south along the east coast to southern Queensland and northern New South Wales. It may also reach inland north-western Victoria near the Murray River, and it is also found in New Guinea. Its preferred habitat is tall grassland and savanna, often located close to bodies of water.
