About Dendrocoptes auriceps (Vigors, 1831)
This is a medium-sized pied woodpecker with yellow present in its crown. Its black plumage has white bars rather than white spots. On the underparts, a prominent black moustachial stripe extends to the breast, and the white underparts are marked with black streaks. Its vent is a deep pink color. In males, the forecrown is brown, the center of the crown is yellow, the rear of the crown is red, and the rear of the neck is black. In females, the entire crown is yellow. The natural habitats of this species are temperate forests, and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.
