About Dendrocopos macei (Vieillot, 1818)
This is a medium-sized pied woodpecker. Its upperparts are black with heavy white barring. The undertail is red, while the breast and belly are buff, with light barring on the flanks and faint streaking along the sides. Its whitish cheeks are partially bordered by a black line. Males have a red crown with an orange forehead, while females have a black crown. The natural habitats of this species are subtropical or tropical dry forest, subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, and subtropical or tropical moist montane forest.
