About Dendroalsia abietina (Hook.) E.Britton ex Broth.
Dendroalsia abietina (Hook.) E.Britton ex Broth. is a species of moss, and it is the only species in the genus Dendroalsia. This moss is rather large and conspicuous. It is easy to recognize when dry, because each of its stems curls downward like a clenched fist. Dendroalsia abietina is a common moss throughout the Pacific Northwest, found in California, Oregon, Washington, and extending into British Columbia. Its full range stretches from Los Angeles County and the Channel Islands to Vancouver Island. It is very common in the oak woodlands of the Inner Coast Ranges, Sacramento Valley, and Willamette Valley. Dendroalsia abietina often grows to cover entire tree trunks, leaving very little space for other competing species, but it can also grow on rocks. While other mosses like Antitrichia california and Antitrichia curtipendula prefer to grow at the bases of oak trees, Dendroalsia abietina is more commonly found growing on oak tree trunks.
