Dendrelaphis kopsteini is the only species within its genus that has red coloration on the anterior portion of its body. At midbody, its dorsal scales are arranged in 15 rows. This species has 167 to 181 ventral scales, and 140 to 154 subcaudal scales. Dendrelaphis kopsteini is distributed across Brunei, Indonesia, Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. Its preferred natural habitat is forest, occurring at altitudes ranging from sea level up to 624 meters (2,047 feet). It has also been recorded in artificial habitats including village gardens. Dendrelaphis kopsteini reproduces via oviparity, meaning it lays eggs.
