About Delphinium carolinianum Walter

Delphinium carolinianum Walter, commonly called Carolina larkspur, prairie larkspur, and blue larkspur, is a species of perennial flowering plant in the buttercup family. It is native to central and eastern North America, and grows in prairies and rocky glades. It blooms with blue to white flowers during the spring. Four subspecies of Delphinium carolinianum have been formally named: Delphinium carolinianum var. calciphilum, which is native to cedar glades of the Southeastern United States; Delphinium carolinianum var. carolinianum, which is widespread across central and eastern North America; Delphinium carolinianum var. vimineum, which is native to coastal areas of the United States and Mexico; and Delphinium carolinianum var. virescens, which is native to the Central United States.
