About Dellichthys morelandi Briggs, 1955

Dellichthys morelandi, commonly known as the New Zealand urchin clingfish, is a species of clingfish. It is distributed around New Zealand, in areas where sea urchins live. This fish grows to a total length between 2 and 3 centimetres. The species was first formally described by John C. Briggs in 1955. At the time of its description, it was considered the only member of the monotypic genus Dellichthys. This classification remained until 2018, when a second species in the genus, Dellichthys trnskii, was described after being discovered in intertidal and shallow coastal waters of New Zealand that same year. Briggs chose the specific name morelandi to honour John Munne Moreland (1921–2012), who worked at the Dominion Museum in Wellington.
