About Deinandra increscens (H.M.Hall ex D.D.Keck) B.G.Baldwin
Deinandra increscens is a species of flowering plant in the Asteraceae family, commonly called grassland tarweed. This species is endemic to California. Most known populations are located in Monterey, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Barbara Counties, including on Santa Cruz Island and Santa Rosa Island. A small number of isolated populations have been recorded in Kern and Merced Counties, growing within the urban areas of the cities of Merced and Bakersfield; these are most likely cultivated specimens. Deinandra increscens is an annual plant that grows up to 100 cm, or 40 inches, tall. It produces numerous flower heads, which are often tightly clustered. Each flower head holds yellow ray florets and disc florets that have yellow corollas, but red or purple anthers. Deinandra bacigalupii, commonly known as Livermore tarplant, was previously classified within Deinandra increscens ssp. increscens, before it was separated and raised to full species status in 1999.
