About Dawsonia longiseta Hampe
Dawsonia longiseta Hampe is an erect moss that forms bluish-green leaves. It grows in open colonies or as scattered individual plants, reaching 1โ3 cm (0.39โ1.18 in) in height. Its leaves are stiff and pointed, measuring approximately 5โ7 mm (0.20โ0.28 in) long. The leaves have a broad nerve and a slightly serrated edge. In dry conditions, the leaves turn brown and lie pressed against the stem, pointing upwards. When the plant is in the sporophyte stage, it produces capsules on stalks that grow 2โ4 cm (0.79โ1.57 in) tall. Developing capsules are covered by hairy, pinkish calyptrae. Mature capsules are small and dark, and sometimes the white hairs of the peristome are visible on them. This moss occurs in south-eastern South Australia, eastern Queensland, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, and Victoria. It grows in shaded locations on clay, sandy, or rocky soil. It can be found in a range of habitats including river banks, roadsides, gullies, and sclerophyll forests, from sea level up to 1000 metres.
