About Dasyscolia ciliata (Fabricius, 1787)

Dasyscolia ciliata is a species of scoliid wasp that occurs throughout the Mediterranean. It is the only species classified in the genus Dasyscolia, and it is the only known pollinator of the European orchid Ophrys speculum. Male Dasyscolia ciliata wasps are tricked into pollinating this orchid through pseudocopulation. The flower uses Pouyannian mimicry to successfully mimic the appearance and scent of the female wasp.
