About Dasyprocta variegata Goldman, 1913
The brown agouti, with the scientific name Dasyprocta variegata Goldman, 1913, is an agouti species from the family Dasyproctidae. It is native to parts of central or southeastern Peru, ranging east into western Brazil, specifically within the administrative areas of Acre, Amazonas, and Rondônia, and south to a strip of Bolivia. It was originally considered to be the same species as the Central American agouti, Dasyprocta punctata, but was later revised as a separate distinct species. The brown agouti has an orange-brown body, with an average total length of 61 cm (24.01 in) and an average weight of 1.8 kg (3.96 lbs). It has dark coloration on its head, rump, and the midline of its back. Individuals found in Peru have noticeably different, distinctive coloration, which is discussed in further detail in later text. This species is a common prey item of the South American jaguar. Brown agoutis live in forested areas near Brazil nut trees (Bertholletia excelsa), and are also found around gardens and plantations.
